Kolkata: Two pre-teen girls and a teenager were burnt alive in a fire sparked during bursting of crackers to celebrate Diwali in Howrah district town of Uluberia, official sources said on Saturday.
The tragedy happened in Uluberia’s Bazarpara area on Friday evening in the house of one belonging to Kajal Sheikh and one of the three children belonged to his family while others were neighbours.

Although the local people took them to a nearby hospital where the medics declared dead. The police identified the victims as Tania Mistry (14), Ishaan Dhara (6) and Mumtaz Khatun (8).
Mishap during bursting crackers
The mishap occurred whilst the local residents were bursting firecrackers in ward number 27 of Uluberia municipality when the fire sparked after igniting firecrackers kept nearby, causing a blaze that led to a cylinder explosion in an adjacent house and trapped the family members – including three children – who were inside.

The three were soon taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
Two other children were seriously injured in the fire and were under treatment at Uluberia Medical College and Hospital. (with Agency inputs)
