Washington: US President Joe Biden won’t attend the Summer Olympics in Tokyo scheduled to begin from July 23, the White House said on Monday.

"The President is not planning to attend the Games. He will certainly be rooting for the athletes," the White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters.

She further added that a US delegation would attend the Olympics.

"We will have a delegation from the United States, as we have historically had. But we will continue to also convey the public health guidelines and guidance that we’ve been — we’ve been delivering out there about only essential travel," she said.

A Japanese newspaper last week had reported that preparation was going on for US first lady Jill Biden to attend the games.

However, the US officials has not confirmed whether Ms Biden will attend the Olympics.
