The move to rename the station is part of an effort initiated by Yogi Adityanath in the memory of Jan Sangh leader Deen Dayal Upadhyaya as he was found dead in mysterious circumstances near Mughalsarai station on February 11, 1968.

Mughalsarai station, built by British, is one of the oldest and biggest railway junctions in the country. The proposal to rename the railway station was put forward by the BJP government in August last year.
