Lucknow: The counting of votes for the by-elections on nine Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh is underway with tight security measures in place. 

According to early trends, BJP+ is leading on 6 while SP on 3 seats.

The bypolls, held on November 20, took place in the constituencies of Meerapur (Muzaffarnagar), Kundarki (Moradabad), Ghaziabad, Khair (Aligarh), Karhal (Mainpuri), Sisamau (Kanpur Nagar), Phulpur (Prayagraj), Katehari (Ambedkarnagar), and Majhawan (Mirzapur). A total of 90 candidates, including 11 women, contested these seats.

Counting process
The vote counting process will take between 20 and 32 rounds, depending on the constituency. A three-tier security system has been implemented to ensure the safety of the counting venues.

While the results will not directly impact the composition of Uttar Pradesh’s 403-member Assembly, the bypolls are seen as an important prestige battle between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition parties. (with Agency inputs)
