London: The UK government has launched a countrywide "blitz" targeting Indian restaurants, nail bars, convenience stores and other businesses that employ undocumented migrant workers. 

828 Premises Raided
Throughout January alone, Immigration Enforcement teams descended on 828 premises, including nail bars, convenience stores, restaurants and car washes, marking a 48% rise compared to the previous January. Arrests also surged to 609, demonstrating a 73% increase from just 352 the previous year,  the UK Home office said in a report.

Indian Restaurant Raided
During a visit by immigration officials to an Indian restaurant in Humberside, seven illegal immigrants were arrested while four others detained, the Home Office said.

Elsewhere, in South London, a visit to a grocery warehouse resulted in 6 arrests and 4 people being detained.

As part of this activity, Immigrant Enforcement play a critical safeguarding role, working closely with the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority and other organisations to allow employees to report labour exploitation, the Home office said in a statement. 
   
Eddy Montgomery, Director of Enforcement, Compliance and Crime, expressed hope that the actions would send a strong signal. 

"I hope it sends a strong signal that there is no hiding place from the law, and we will continue to ramp up our activity to ensure those involved face the full consequences," he said.
