Telangana Tunnel Collapse: Eight workers still trapped, Know all updates

Hyderabad: Eight workers are still trapped 14 km inside an under-construction tunnel of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) project after a portion of its roof collapsed on Saturday morning in Nagarkurnool district. 

According to reports, the rescue operation in the tunnel suffered a major setback on Sunday morning when teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) encountered significant difficulties in reaching the collapsed section of the tunnel.

'No Accessible Way to Enter Tunnel'
An SDRF official stated that there is no accessible way to enter the tunnel. The collapse of the roof has completely blocked the entry, and the tunnel is filled with knee-deep mud. Following this, teams from the SDRF, NDRF, and other rescue forces, along with officials from Singareni Collieries, returned after inspecting the collapsed section.

State Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy 
Telangana’s Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy said that the state government is seeking help from experts, including those who were involved in rescuing workers trapped in a similar incident in Uttarakhand last year.

Workers from multiple states trapped in the tunnel The state government is also taking assistance from the army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Among those trapped are two engineers, two machine operators, and four other workers. They hail from Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Punjab, and Jammu & Kashmir.

Identification of Trapped Workers 
The trapped workers include Manoj Kumar, a project engineer, and Srinivas, a field engineer, both from Uttar Pradesh; four laborers from Jharkhand – Sandeep Sahu, Jatak, Santosh Sahu, and Anuj Sahu; and two machine operators from Robbins India Company – Sunny Singh from Jammu & Kashmir and Gurpreet Singh from Punjab.

Sources said that arrangements have been made to supply breathable air into the tunnel to ensure the safety of those trapped inside. The rescue operation is equipped with engineering teams from the Emergency Task Force (ETF), a medical contingent from the Army Medical Corps’ field ambulance, several ambulances, three high-capacity pumping sets, armored hoses, and other supporting equipment.

Mallu Ravi, a Congress MP from Nagarkurnool, stated that 145 personnel from the NDRF have arrived from Hyderabad, along with 120 members from the SDRF. They are making every effort to rescue those trapped. Oxygen is being supplied inside the tunnel, and since water has accumulated inside, a 100 HP pump is being brought in, along with a 250 KV generator. Every possible effort is being made to save the lives of those trapped inside.
