Tamil Nadu: Three of a family, including toddler killed in accident in Chengalpattu

Chennai: In a tragic incident, three members of family, including a one-year-old-child were killed, and four others sustained injuries when a tipper lorry rammed into their car at a traffic signal near Singaperumal Kovil in adjoining Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu, on Tuesday.

Police sources, seven members of a family were proceeding to Madurai after attending a function
in Chennai.

The victims were identified as Karthik (35), his wife Nandhini (30), their children, Ilamathi (7) and Sai Velan (1), Nandhini's father Ayyanar (65), mother Deva Poonjari (60) and driver Saravanan (35).

When their car stopped at a signal, a speeding tipper lorry travelling from Chennai to Chengalpattu, rammed into it from behind, crushing it against a container lorry in front.

The car was sandwiched between the two lorries and the front portion got stuck into the rear side of the container lorry and was completely damaged.

Onlookers and other motorists along with fire service personnel rescued the trapped members from the car, which was reduced to a mangled heap.

However, Ayyanar, who was sitting in the front seat, and Saravanan were killed on the spot. Later, Saivelan succumbed to injuries at a hospital, were the four other injured were admitted.

Reports said their condition was said to be critical.

Traffic on the arterial and the busy Chennai-Trichy National Highway was disrupted for nearly two hours following the accident.

Guduvancherry Traffic police have registered a case and are investigating.
