Chennai: Eight people were killed in two separate road accidents in the state on Tuesday. Five people were killed when the car in which they were returning to their village in Tiruchengode after a temple festival, collided with a container truck in the wee hours near Paramathivelur in Namakkal district.
In the other mishap, three students, who were on their way to school in a bicycle, were knocked down by a speeding car at Vaniyambadi in Tirupattur district. A report from Namakkal district said seven members of a family were returning home after attending a temple festival in Karur district when the mishap occurred. P Ravi (45) of Morepalayam near Tiruchengode, who was behind the wheels, his wife R. Kavitha (40) and relatives M. Mahalakshmi (36), P. Santhi (40), Mani alias Kandayee, Kunjammal, and R. Lakshana (4), were returning to to their village from Karur , when the car collided with a stationary container truck on the Salem-Madurai National Highway.

In the mishap, Mahalakshmi, Mani, Kunjammal, and Santhi died on the spot. while Kavitha succumbed on the way to the hospital. Ravi and the child Lakshana were admitted to Namakkal Government Hospital for treatment.
A report from Tirupattur, three students, Vetri, Vijay and Shafiq--all 13 years of age--residents of Valayampattu MGR Nagar in Vaniyambadi were studying in Giri Samudram Government Higher Secondary School. They were on their way to their school in their bicycles and were riding on the service road on the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway.

Suddenly, a speeding car, with Karnataka registration and heading for Bengaluru, crashed into the road median and hit the three students, who were thrown away to a distance and died on the spot. On hearing the news, locals rushed to the spot and nabbed the car driver and thrashed him. Police rushed to the spot and safely rescued them and took them to the station.
The locals also staged a road roko demanding the arrest of the car driver and construction of a flyover to avoid such frequent mishaps. Police pacified them and shifted the bodies to the Government hospital for post mortem. (UNI)
