Colombo, Sri Lanka: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake assured India on Saturday that his country would not allow its territory to be used for any activity that threatens India’s security or regional stability.
The statement came after delegation-level talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a two-day state visit to Sri Lanka.
President Dissanayake sought India’s help in advancing Sri Lanka’s claim before the United Nations regarding the extension of its continental shelf beyond its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). He requested PM Modi’s support in starting early technical discussions on the matter.

The two leaders also discussed potential collaboration in digital technology. "Sri Lanka wants to build a strong digital economy for growth and innovation," said Dissanayake. He thanked India for providing a grant of 300 crore rupees for Sri Lanka’s Digital Identity Project.
The President highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and religious ties between the two nations. "India and Sri Lanka share a strong friendship built on mutual respect and common interests," he said.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome at Independence Square—a first for any foreign leader. Despite heavy rain, six Sri Lankan ministers greeted him at the airport.

During his visit, Modi met the Indian community and watched a traditional puppet show. He will also travel to Anuradhapura to inaugurate India-funded development projects.
India, Sri Lanka, and the UAE signed a trilateral agreement in the presence of both leaders, marking another step in regional cooperation.
This is Modi’s first visit to Sri Lanka since 2019. The trip aims to strengthen partnerships under the joint vision adopted during President Dissanayake’s earlier visit to India.
