Sri Lanka Parliamentary Polls: President Dissanayake-led NPP secures majority in snap elections

Colombo: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake-led National People’s Power (NPP) has registered a landslide victory in snap elections, winning 137 seats out of 196, according to the Island country's Election Commission data.
According to local media reports, NPP set to cross 150 seats in the 225-member parliament following the distribution of seats under a proportional seat distribution system.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SBJ) party of opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, the son of former President Ranasinghe Premadasa, secured 35 seats.
New Democratic Front & Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi
Ex-President Ranil Wickremesinghe-led The New Democratic Front has only won three seats while Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) which represents the Tamil ethnic minority secured seven seats.

Dissanayake's appeal to people
During his campaign, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake appealed to the people of the Island country to give him two-thirds majority in parliament so that he could implement his agenda on economic front, bolster anti-poverty programs, cutting down on government expenditure and take action on corruption.
The election happened one year ahead of schedule as President dismissed the parliament immediately after assuming office in September this year. (With Agency Inputs)
