Jaipur: The Bhajanlal Sharma government in Rajasthan has suffered a major setback in the by-election in Karanpur assembly seat where sitting minister Surendra Pal Singh got defeated by Congress candidate Rupinder Singh by 12,570 votes.

The victory of Congress candidate Rupinder Singh is considered quite significant for the Congress which had lost badly in the recently held assembly elections, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

The Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma appointed Surendra Pal Singh TT, before contesting elections, as a State Minister with Independent Charge on December 30 during the expansion of his cabinet. 

In the meantime, it is believed that Congress candidate Rupinder Singh received sympathy votes for the sad demise of his father and sitting MLA Gurmeet Singh Kooner, leading to the conduct of elections on 199 of the 200 seats in the Rajasthan assembly.
