Punjab: Sub-Inspector shot dead in Tarn Taran; CM announces Rs 1 Cr relief

Tarn Taran: Charanjit Singh, a Punjab Police sub-inspector was shot dead while on duty in Tarn Taran during a violent fight between two groups in Kot Mohammad Khan village on Wednesday nigh, reports Dynamite News correspondent. 

Another Police official was also injured in the clash.

The incident happened under the Goindwal Sahib police station.

The deceased sub-inspector Charanjit Singh was heading a police team to the village where the scuffle between two factions occured. The groups had reportedly been involved in a dispute for several days.

20 Person Arrested 

After the incident, SSP Abhimanyu confirmed that 20 persons, including village sarpanch Kuldeep, have been booked under multiple sections, including murder. 

CM Mann: Rs 1 Crore Relief

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced a compensation package of Rs 1 crore for his family.

In a post on X, CM Mann wrote, "Salute to the bravery of Shaheed Sub-Inspector Charanjit Singh who sacrificed his life while performing his duty in Tarn Taran. His commitment and courage will always be remembered. The Punjab Government will provide an ex gratia of Rs 1 crore, while an additional Rs 1 crore will be paid by HDFC Bank as part of an insurance scheme. We stand in solidarity with the martyr’s family."

The FIR has been registered and further investigation is underway.
