Pakistan: 15 killed, 7 injured in fresh armed clashes in Kurram

Islamabad: Fifteen people, including two women and a child, were killed and seven others injured in armed clashes between two groups in Kurram district on Saturday, officials said.

Police sources claim that early in the morning, fighting broke out when Maq¬bal tribesmen opened fire, injuring two Kanj Alizai tribesmen.

Attacks on passengers
They said that attacks on passengers and other cars occurred shortly after the event, and the fighting quickly extended to several areas of the district, Dawn reported.

According to the sources, the deceased and injured were brought to the district hospital in Parachinar.

"One injured person is admitted, and the others were moved to other hospitals," stated Dr. Syed Meer Hasan, the medical supervisor of Parachinar DHQ.

Javedullah Mahsud, the deputy commissioner for Kurram, stated that efforts were being made to secure highways for use in transit and to bring about permanent peace.

Tribal council statement
A local jirga, or tribal council, member named Pir Haidar Shah stated that the fire event was a setback to peace efforts in the region and that Jirga elders were conversing with the tribesmen at the time. (with Agency inputs)
