Naypyitaw: The death toll from the earthquake in Myanmar on Friday has now reached 1,644, with over 3,400 people injured and about 140 missing, reports Chinese news agency Xinhua.

The magnitude 7.7 quake struck near Mandalay on Friday afternoon. Another jolt with a magnitude of 6.7 followed about 10 minutes later with tremors felt in Bangladesh, India, Laos, China and Thailand.

A large number of buildings including hundreds of homes and schools have been destroyed.

Many people are believed to remain still trapped under the collapsed houses and buildings.

UNICEF Officer Version

A UNICEF officer said, "There has been large scale infrastructure damage. Electricity is out. Communication lines are down as well. It's very difficult for us to communicate with our teams on the ground."
