Diamond trader Mehul Choksi arrested for fraud in Belgium; Know the whole matter

New Delhi: Belgian police has arrested wanted diamond trader Mehul Choksi in the loan fraud case of Rs 13,500 crore related to Punjab National Bank (PNB), reports Dynamite News correspondent.
Choksi (65) has been sent to jail after this arrest on 11 April 2025 on the request of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Choksi was hiding in Antwerp with his wife
Actually, after fleeing from India, Choksi was living with his wife Preeti Choksi in Antwerp city of Belgium. Preeti holds Belgian citizenship, while according to reports, Mehul had a Belgian F-residency card. It is being told that he came to Belgium from Antigua for health reasons.

Arrest made on the basis of old arrest warrant
At the same time, during Choksi's arrest, the Belgian police cited two old arrest warrants issued by a Mumbai court. These warrants were issued on 23 May 2018 and 15 June 2021. However, Choksi's lawyer can seek his release in Belgium on the grounds of ill health and other humanitarian grounds.
Nephew Nirav Modi's name also in the scam
Choksi's nephew Nirav Modi's name has also surfaced in this big scam, who is currently hiding in London. Both are being investigated by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in India and the extradition process is also pending.

The story of his escape from India
Choksi, who fled India with Nirav Modi in January 2018, had taken Antigua citizenship even before the scam came to light. He was detained in Dominica in 2021 while he was travelling to Cuba. Choksi claims that all this is a political conspiracy and his properties in India have been seized illegally.
