The resolution for his suspension was presented by state Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil. Patil said that Azmi’s comments in praise of Aurangzeb were a dishonour to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and had hurt the dignity of the House.

Speaker Rahul Narvekar announced that the resolution was passed unanimously and suspended Abu Azmi for the entire duration of the budget session.

However Abu Azmi on Tuesday claimed that his words had been twisted and 'he was ready to take back his words and apologise...'

"My words have been twisted. I have said what historians and writers have claimed about Aurangzeb Rahmatullah Ali," said Azmi.

"I have not made any derogatory comment about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Sambhaji Maharaj or any other great men - but still if anyone has been hurt by my statement, then I take back my words, my statement," Azmi took to video on X.
