New Delhi/Lucknow: Ahead of the Mahakumbh Mela, which is scheduled to begin from January 13, the Uttar Pradesh Police has released an awareness video on its social media account on Sunday, urging people to stay cautious of cyber fraud related to any kind of online booking for the Mahakumbh.

UP Police issues cyber alert
The UP Police shared the video on the social media platform X from their official handle.
The video aims to educate people about online crimes and cyber fraud. It illustrates how a middle-class family becomes a victims of cybercriminals through an online link and a phone call.
In the video, a father books a hotel online for the Mahakumbh at his daughter’s request. Meanwhile, the mother suggests using the money to pay the child’s school fees instead. However, the father is unable to deny his daughter’s emotional appeal. Without proper verification, he books a resort for the Mahakumbh in Prayagraj through an online link and a phone call. The cybercriminals lure him with multiple offers.
After the online booking, the entire family travels to Prayagraj. Upon reaching the designated location, they find neither a hotel nor a taxi, nor the any promised facilities. The family realizes they have fallen victim to cybercriminals and have been duped.

Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (14C)
India witnessed a significant surge in cyber fraud losses in 2024, according to the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (14C), which comes under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. By the first week of December 2024, cyber fraud victims lost a staggering Rs 19,888.42 crore, a substantial increase from the Rs 921.59 crore lost in 2023.
