New Delhi: The Union government has appointed Finance and Revenue Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the 11th Chairman of the capital market regulator, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
Pandey, who is a 1987-batch IAS officer from the Odisha cadre, would replace Madhabi Puri Buch, who completes her three-year tenure on Friday, Febuary 28.
Pandey has been appointed Chairman of the SEBI for three years, a government order showed.

He has hled many crucial departments.

He was Secretary of 3 Departments
He held the charge of Secretary of three Departments, i.e., Department of Investment & Public Asset Management (DIPAM), since 24.10.2019, Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) since 01.08.2024 and Department of Personnel and Training since 04.11.2024. Both the DIPAM and DPE function under the Ministry of Finance.
Finance Secretary
Subsequently, he was appointed as Finance Secretary in the Ministry of Finance (MOF) in September 2024. Pandey was also assigned the role of Secretary of the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) after Vivek Joshi moved to his home state.
Longest-Serving Secretary in DIPAM
The 1987-IAS batch officer was the longest-serving secretary in DIPAM, which looks after government equity in public sector companies, as well as the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE).
Later, he assumed the charge of the revenue department on January 9 after the government elevated Sanjay Malhotra as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Played Key Role in Budget 2025
He has also played a major role in 2025-26 Budget, which had tax reliefs totalling Rs 1 lakh crore to the middle class. He was also involved in the drafting of the new Income Tax Bill, which seeks to replace the 64-year-old Income Tax Act, 1961.

In the Union Govt. his previous positions include Joint Secretary, Planning Commission (now NITI Aayog), Joint Secretary, Cabinet Secretariat and Deputy Secretary in Ministry of Commerce.
Odisha Govt
In State Govt. of Odisha, he served as administrative head in the Departments of Health, General Administration, Commercial Taxes, Transport and Finance. He also served as Executive Director of Odisha State Finance Corporation and Managing Director of Odisha Small Industries Corporation.
Education Background
Shri Pandey holds a Masters in Economics from Panjab University, Chandigarh and an MBA from the University of Birmingham (UK). (With Agnecy Inputs)
