Kannur: Five people have been arrested for illegally possessing a two-toed snake sand boa (Eryx Johnii) on Thursday at Payyannur in Kannur. 

The two-toed sand boa is a non-venomous snake and is protected under the Wildlife Protection Act.

The accused were arrested by a team of Forest Department led by Taliparamba forest range officer Sanoop Krishnan.

The snake was brought from Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh to Kannur for sale.

The arrested persons have been identified as Pradeepan TP 49, Bhikesh 39, Manoj M 30, - all residents of Trikaripur in Kannur, T Naveen 35 and K Chandrasekharan 37 from Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh.

A car and a scooter which were used by the accused have also been seized.

A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
