Kerala: Customs seize gold worth Rs 34 lakh at Kochi Airport

Kochi: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs department has seized 649.05 grams of gold worth Rs 34 lakhs at Kochi airport, officials said on Wednesday. On the basis of profiling done by the officers of the Customs AIU batch, a passenger coming from Abu Dhabi to Cochin International Airport by flight 6E-1735 was intercepted at the green channel on Wednesday.

During the subsequent questioning, the customs officials noticed that the passenger was straightening his underwear with his hands through his pants pocket, they said.

"During the examination of the said passenger, grey-coloured trunk underwear weighing 649.05-gram gold in paste form was seized," the customs official said. The accused has been identified as Akbar, a native of Changaramkulam. Further investigations are going on.

As per officials, the Customs department seized 3.340 kg of gold from seven passengers in March this year so far.
