Kashmir under bone-chilling cold; Coldest night in Srinagar

Srinagar: The Kashmir valley is undergoing bone chilling cold with no respite as temperatures continue to plummet, with Srinagar recording yet another coldest night of the season at -6.2°C on Friday, reports Dynamite News correspondent. 

According to the Meteorological Department in Srinagar, this temperature is 4.2°C below the seasonal average for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Just a day earlier, Srinagar had recorded its previous lowest temperature of -6.0°C.

Frozen Dal Lake

Several parts of the Dal Lake in Srinagar have been frozen due to the freezing temperature disrupting normal activities. Reports of freezing of other water bodies and tapes were also received from several areas.

Shopian in south Kashmir recorded -10.0°C, Larno -9.1°C, Anantnag -9.9°C, Pulwama -9.5°C, and Khudwani -8.5°C on Friday, Faizan Arif, an independent Kashmir weather forecaster, said.

“The cold wave will continue at isolated to scattered places of the Kashmir Valley with overall no significant change in the weather till December 26.

A feeble Western Disturbance (WD) is likely to hit and can cause light snow over the few higher reaches towards late evening of December 27 night to morning of December 28, they said, adding another light spell of snowfall is possible on the higher elevations on December 31.

Pahalgam coldest 
Pahalgam remained the coldest place, with the temperature further plunging to minus-8.2°C on Friday against the 6.8°C on Thursday. This was 3.7°C below normal for the tourist spot of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

The minimum temperature at Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, also significantly slipped down and was recorded at -7.6°C against the -7.0°C the previous night, and this was 5.3°C below normal for the place during this period of the season.

Kokernag also witnessed a significant fall and recorded at -5.8°C on Friday against the -5.3°C a day ago, and this was 3.7°C below normal for the picnic place of south Kashmir.

Gulmarg at -6.0°C
The night temperature at Gulmarg, the famed ski resort in north Kashmir's Baramulla district, dipped by a degree and was recorded at -6.0°C on Friday against the -5.0°C on Thursday.

The Kupwara district dropped to a low of -6.5°C on Friday against the 6.2°C recorded the previous night, and this was 3.8°C below normal for the border town during this period of season, the MeT office.
