New Delhi: The Government of India has appointed retired Supreme Court judge Justice Dinesh Maheshwari as the Chairman of the Law Commission of India, a key body responsible for legal reforms and recommending updates to the country’s laws, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Alongside him, Hitesh Jain, a senior advocate, and Prof. DP Verma, an academic expert, have been appointed as full-time members of the Commission.

Former Justice Dinesh Maheshwari was born on May 15, 1958. He completed his BSc (Hons) in Physics from Maharaja College, Rajasthan University, Jaipur in 1977. He then studied law from Jodhpur University and obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree in 1980. He started his legal career as an advocate in the Rajasthan High Court and joined the Rajasthan Bar Council on March 8, 1981.

After practising law for 23 years, Justice Maheshwari was elevated as a judge of the Rajasthan High Court on September 2, 2004.

He was elevated as a judge of the Allahabad High Court on July 19, 2014. The first-generation judge was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court on February 24, 2016.

He was appointed as the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court on February 12, 2018. Justice Maheshwari was promoted as a judge of the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019.
