Israel has carried out strikes on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, hours after a rocket hit a house north of Tel Aviv.

Gaza: Israel has carried out strikes on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip, hours after a rocket hit a house north of Tel Aviv.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Monday that the office of Hamas's political leader and the group's military intelligence headquarters were among the targets.

Ealier, the IDF blamed Hamas for the launch of the rocket that hit the Israeli community of Mishmeret, injuring seven people.

The IDF tweeted on Monday evening that "dozens of rockets" were being fired towards Israel.

Reacting to the current situation, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told reporters during a ceremony in Washington , "Israel will not tolerate this, I will not tolerate this. " 

"Israel is responding forcefully to this wanton aggression,"  Netanyahu added.

Netanyahu also said that he would return home after meeting Trump, cancelling an address to pro-Israel lobby AIPAC's annual conference on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Trump denounced the attack as "despicable" and said the US "recognises Israel's absolute right to defend itself".

So far no Palestinian militant group has said it fired the rocket.

The flare-up comes at a highly sensitive time for Israel, which holds elections on April 9.(UNI)
