IPS officer allegedly consumes poison, critical in UP

An IPS officer is critical after he allegedly consumed some poisonous substance here Wednesday.

Kanpur: A 30-year-old IPS officer is critical after he allegedly consumed some poisonous substance here Wednesday, police said.

Surendra Kumar Das, an IPS officer of 2014 batch, was posted here as the Superintendent of Police City (East) last month.

Family of IPS officer's gathered at hospital

"On Tuesday night, Das had spoken to circle officers regarding patrolling. At 4 AM Wednesday, his wife, who is a doctor, noticed that his health suddenly deteriorated.

"He was rushed to a government hospital from where he was shifted to a private nursing home, where his condition is stated to be serious," ADG Kanpur zone Avinash Chandra told PTI.

On getting information, family members of Das arrived here from Lucknow.

"The police department has nothing to do with the matter as it appears that he has consumed some poisonous substance for any other reason," Chandra said.

"He had worked till late in the night on Tuesday. His behaviour was very good. Now, for what reason he had consumed poisonous substance will be probed," the ADG said.

Police security at hospital 

He also said, "It has been decided to question the IPS officer's wife." 

Meanwhile, senior police and district administration officials, along with a team of doctors, are monitoring the condition of Das, who has been put on ventilator.

A senior doctor at the nursing home where Das is admitted, said, "It is too early to reach any conclusion as to whether Das consumed poison to commit suicide or he took something laced with poisonous substance accidentally. (PTI)
