IIS officer SM Khan, Press Secretary to APJ Abdul Kalam, passes away

SM Khan, a retired Indian Information Services Officer (1982 Batch) and Press Secretary to the former President APJ Abdul Kalam, passed away here in New Delhi on Sunday.

New Delhi: SM Khan, a retired Indian Information Services Officer (1982 Batch) and Press Secretary to the former President APJ Abdul Kalam, passed away here in New Delhi on Sunday. He was 67.

Khan, who also served as the CBI spokesperson from 1989 to 2002, breathed his last at a private hospital. According to his family members, the burial will take place on Monday afternoon at his family graveyard in Khurja (Bulandshahr, UP). 

Khan also served as the Director of Jamia Hamdard Residential Coaching Academy.

Born on June 15, 1957 at Khurja in Bulandshahr, Uttar Pradesh, Khan belongs to a family of lawyers. He did his LLB and then LLM from Aligarh Muslim University and won the Chancellor’s Gold Medal. He later went to University of Wales for a degree in Economics.

CBI spokesperson
During his 13-year stint — 1989 to 2002 — at the CBI, Khan was the face of the Agency when it was handling several high-profile cases.

After his term ended with the President, Khan moved to a prestigious position as the Director General (News) at Doordarshan. He also held the position of Vice-President and trustee at the India Islamic and Cultural Centre, Delhi.

Khan was also a member of the Aligarh Muslim University Court and was also appointed by the President of India as his nominee in the Executive Council of the AMU.(with Agency inputs)
