Lucknow: A criminal, who used to make WahatsApp video calls and threaten Maharashtra-based traders by showing them a pistol, has been arrested by the UP STF. Brijesh Chauhan, who had become a symbol of fear for traders in Maharashtra, was apprehended from Ballia.
Maharashtra police are now preparing for further legal action against him.
Maharashtra Police Sought STF’s Help
Several cases had already been registered against the notorious Brijesh Chauhan in Maharashtra, and he had been evading the police for a long time. To arrest him, Panvel City Police shared intelligence and sought assistance from the UP STF. Following this, Brijesh Chauhan was arrested in a joint operation by the Panvel City (Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra) Police and the UP STF.
Identification of the accused
The accused is a resident of Jigni of Gadwari police station area of Ballia district. He was nabbed from Kunwar Singh Tiraha Rampur, Thana Kotwali Ballia.

The mobile phone from which he used to call businessmen and threaten them and sought 'goonda tax' was also recovered from the accused's possession.
Absconding for long time
A case number 100/2025 under section 308(4) and case number 103/2025 under section 308(4) were registered against Brijesh Chauhan at the Panvel City police station for demanding extortion money from two businessmen, in which the wanted Brijesh Chauhan was absconding.
STF Team
After Panvel police shared information with UP STF and sought cooperation, a team led by Inspector Amit Srivastava under the supervision of Shailesh Pratap Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, STF Field Unit, Varanasi and a team of Panvel City Police started carrying out intelligence gathering at the local level.
Accused was hiding in Ballia
It was found that Brijesh Chauhan was hiding in Ballia district. On this information, a team was formed under the leadership of Shahzada Khan STF Field Unit, Varanasi and sent to the concerned area of Ballia district along with Maharashtra Police on Sunday. During this, a reliable source informed that Brijesh Chauhan is present near Kunwar Singh Tiraha Rampur under Kotwali police station area.

Subsequently, the STF Varanasi team reached the place and Brijesh Chauhan was arrested near Kunwar Singh Tiraha Rampur.
Big revelation during interrogation
During interrogation, he told that he had earlier lived in Mumbai and knew the two businessmen Prashant Prabhakar Dalvi and Chandrakant Arjun. He also knew that both the businessmen would give him money if he threatened them. The accused had made a video call on WhatsApp and threatened to kill their children by showing a pistol to both the businessmen and demanding money.
Police was searching for him for a long time.
