Google pays tribute to Rukhmabai Raut on her 153rd birthday
Google celebrated 153rd birthday of one of India's first practising doctors Rukhmabai Raut, on the Doodle homepage.
New Delhi: Google celebrated 153rd birthday of one of India's first practising doctors Rukhmabai Raut, on the Doodle homepage on Wednesday.
Rukhmabai Raut was born on 22 November 1864 in Mumbai. She is the first Indian woman doctor in the colonial era. Even though, She stood against the practice of Hindu marriage. She got married in an early age of 11 to Dadaji Bhikaji. However, after her marriage, she stayed with her widowed mother Jayantibai and educate herself.

Although, Dadaji Bhikaji, did not support Raut choice to continue her studying, which led her to take the decision of not remaining married to Dadaji.
Due to this, in 1884, Dadaji filed a petition in the Bombay High Court to restore husband’s marital rights over his wife. According to the Court judgement, Rukhmabai to live with her husband or else go to the imprisonment. But Rukhmabai refused to live with Dadaji and prefered to go to jail.

Rukhmabai Raut, wrote numerous letters in the newspapers and won the support of many. After this case that the Age of Consent Act was passed in 1891, due to which child marriages was outlawed across the British Empire.
Rukhmabai was an active social reformer, she took her last breath on September 25, 1991 at the age of 91.
