New Delhi: Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92, AIIMS said on Thursday night. 

He was being traeted for age-related medical conditions. He was brought to medical emergency at 8:06 pm. 

He was passed away at 9:51 pm, according to the AIIMS. 

Former Union Minister and veteran Congress leader Salman Khurshid also expressed his condolences over the demise of Dr Singh.

"Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India. His contributions to the nation and his dedication to public service will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones," Khurshid posted on X. 

 Former PM was admitted to the emergency department of Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday evening. 

Education

He was born on September 26, 1932 in Punjab. He did his Bachelor’s and Master’s in Economics from Panjab University in 1952 and 1954 respectively.

Dr. Manmohan Singh achieved academic excellence with a distinguished educational background. He earned his Economic Tripos from the prestigious Cambridge University in 1957, followed by a D.Phil in Economics from Oxford University in 1962.

He became the part of Indian government as Economic Advisor in the Commerce Ministry in 1971.

Finance Minister

Dr Singh also served as Union Finance Minister between 1991 and 1996. 

As the Finance Minister in the Narasimha Rao government, he played a pivotal role in shaping India's economic liberalisation. His visionary policies paved the way for India's transition from a closed, state-controlled economy to a more open. This significant shift had far-reaching consequences, including increased foreign investment, rapid economic growth, and India's integration into the global economy. (Being Updated)
