Volgograd: Nigeria stunned Iceland with a stupendous 2-0 victory in their Group D match at the Volgograd Arena on Friday.

Nigeria looked listless in its opening loss to Croatia, and started gradually in this game as well. After a dry first half, Ahmed Musa won the points for Nigeria making the second half interesting. The African nation made a much-needed breakthrough in the 49th minute through Musa.

Victor Moses raced down the sideline and sent a cross into the box for Musa.

The Nigerian frontman net his second ball in the 75th minute after beating a defender and then the keeper. Luck apparently deserted Iceland as they missed a late penalty which was awarded to them after a video assistant referee review.

Gylfi Sigurdsson was asked to take the penalty goal, but he put his spot-kick over the bar in the 83rd minute, dousing Iceland's hopes. The result did Argentina a big favour in the process as it gave a slight lift to the beleaguered group rivals.

Nigeria could now move on if it beat Argentina, but it could also draw and advance as long as Iceland doesn't beat Croatia.(ANI)
