San Francisco/New Delhi: The family of Nilam Shinde, an Indian student admitted to the UC Davis hospital near Sacramento, California, in comatose condition following a car accident, has been granted visa by the US to visit her.
What Is Comatose?
Being comatose is being in a coma, unconscious and unable to communicate, often for long periods of time. A bad illness or unexpected accident or injury — especially to the head — can make you comatose and trapped inside a body that isn't working.
In other words, Comatose in a state of deep and usually prolonged unconsciousness; unable to respond to external stimuli.

The father Tanaji Shinde said they have obtained emergency visa with the help of the Maharashtra government and would be travelling to the US to be by Nilam’s side.
Neelam Shinde, 35, a student of California State University, met with a serious car accident on February 14 and was admitted to hospital in grave condition. She is currently in coma at the UC Davis Hospital.
She hails from Satara in Maharashtra.
The Indian consulate in San Francisco posted on X that they have been in constant touch with the hospital, family, and friends of Nilam for the last several days and been rendering all possible assistance.

NCP Member of Parliament Supriya Sule highlighted the case on social media and appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs to render help in the case.
Sule posted on X: “Student Neelam Shinde has met with an accident in the USA and is hospitalized in a local hospital. Her father, Tanaji Shinde, from Satara, Maharashtra, India, urgently needs to visit his daughter due to a medical emergency. Tanaji Shinde has applied for an urgent visa to the USA and requires assistance.”
