Exit polls predict victory for BJP-led alliances in Maharashtra, Jharkhand; Can it be trusted?

Delhi: Multiple exit polls on Wednesday predicted a victory for the BJP-led alliances in Maharashtra and Jharkhand Assembly polls. 

Five out of six exit polls predicted a win for Mahayuti, while one predicted Congress-led government in Maharashtra.

Exit polls on Jharkhand
 In Jharkhand, three exit polls predicted a win for BJP-led NDA while one forecast victory for INDIA bloc. 

Axis MyIndia was the only one to predict win for the INDIA alliance in Jharkhand with 53 seats out of 81 as against only 25 for BJP-led NDA.

The Matrize Exit poll put the NDA alliance at 42-47 seats while 25-30 seats for the INDIA bloc.
 
In Maharashtra, 145 is the majority mark, while in Jharkhand 41 seats required to get majority.

While the Matrize exit poll conducted in a tie-up with several news organisations forecast 150-170 seats for BJP-led alliance in Maharashtra with a 48% vote share, it gave Congress-led alliance between 110 and 130 seats with a vote share of 42%. 

Meanwhile, the poll conducted by Electoral Edge forecast Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) to win 150 assembly seats while predicting 121 seats to BJP-led Mahayuti and 20 seats to others.

Exit polls in the past 

It is pertinent to mention that the all exit polls failed to predict the outcome of Haryana elections as they predicted a majority for the Congress. 

In Lok Sabha electiont too, they failed to accurately predict the outcome of the seven-phase polls. 

Jharkhand voted in two phases on November 13 and November 20, while polling was held in a single phase in Maharashtra on November 20. The outcome of the polls will be announced on November 23. (With Agency Inputs)
