EC announces by-elections to 6 RS seats in 5 states
The Election Commission (ECI) of India on Thursday announced the by-elections for six Rajya Sabha seats in five different States.
New Delhi: The Election Commission (ECI) of India on Thursday announced the by-elections for six Rajya Sabha seats in five different States. By-elections to one each seat in West Bengal, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra , and two in Tamil Nadu will take place on October 4 and counting will be held on the same day, the poll panel said on Thursday.
The seats had fallen vacant by the resignation of Manas Ranjan Bhunia (West Bengal) , Biswajit Daimary (Assam) KP Munusamy and R Vaithilingam (Tamil Nadu) and Thaawarchand Gehlot (Madhya Pradesh), while the Maharashtra seat due to the death of Rajeev Satav. “The notification will be issued on September 15. The last date of making the nomination is September 22,” the Commission said in a statement.

The last date of withdrawal of candidature is September 27. The poll panel has also announced Rajya Sabha polls for a seat in Puducherry, polling for which will be held along with the five States. The seat would be vacated with the retirement of MP N Gokulakrishnan on October 6.
Meanwhile, the Commission has also announced by-elections to Bihar Legislative council on one seat, which had fallen vacant due to the demise of JDU leader Tanveer Akhtar. The Commission has directed the chief secretaries of the poll bound states to depute a senior officer from the state to ensure that the extra instructions regarding Covid-19 containment measure are complied with while making arrangements for conducting elections.
