Turkey declares state of emergency for three months

Ankara, Turkey/ 21 July 2016. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a state of emergency for three months on Wednesday following Friday nightâs failed army coup.
The declaration could be used to extend the detention of nearly 10,000 people rounded up since the failed coup.
"This measure is in no way against democracy, the law and freedoms. Governors will have expanded powers and the army will be under the command and control of the governors." said President Erdogan after announcing the state of emergency.
More than 600 schools have been closed, more than 50,000 state employees have been rounded up, sacked or suspended in a crackdown by the president. On Wednesday, 99 top military officers were charged in connection with the events of the weekend.
