New Delhi/ 31 May 2016. World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed today. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption across the world.
The day is further promoted to draw attention to the widespread tobacco consumption and its negative health effects. The use of tobacco leads to nearly 6 million deaths each year worldwide, including 600,000 non-smokers who suffer from being exposed to second-hand smoke.
The member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) started to observe World No Tobacco Day from 1987.
In the past twenty years, the day has been met with both keenness and resistance around the globe from governments, public health organizations, smokers, and the tobacco industry.
However, the real question is if the day is observed with any real effect or it is just symbolic in nature.
