Lucknow/ 20 August 2016.
Railway authorities will spend Rs 4.76 lakh to get rid of rats from Uttar Pradesh capital’s Charbagh railway station.

The contract has been given to a private firm for 1 year to kill hundreds of giant rodents which have dug up the base of platforms.

Ajit Kumar Sinha, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, said, "We have awarded the rat killing contract to a private firm. Though there is no set target, the bodies of rats will be checked by the chief health inspector of Charbagh railway station. Work will begin from the last week of August.”

Extensive damage
The rats have caused extensive damage to railway property, government files and passenger goods.

"The rat menace on platforms and in office buildings has caused a huge loss of Rs 10 lakh to vendors in the past year. This has not only frightened them but also passengers. Rats have torn luggage bags in cloak rooms," said an official.

In past three years, this is for the second time that a private company has been hired for this job.  The first one, in 2013, had failed to deliver.
