R K Mathur Has Taken Oath as New CIC

The new Chief Information Commissioner R K Sinha had been Defence Secretary of India for two years. President Pranab Mukherjee administered oath of office to new CIC on Monday at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President Hamid Ansari were present at the ceremony. 

 

 

Mathur, former Defence Secretary
Mathur was appointed Defence Secretary on 28 May 2013 and retired from the post in May 2015.  He has held various positions in his cadre state and at the Centre. He has been Secretary in both Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Defence Production and Supplies. 


Mathur, an IITian 
Sixty-two-year-old Mathur, is a retired IAS officer of Tripura cadre (1977 batch), did his graduation from IIT, Kanpur and post-graduation from IIT, Delhi.


Second-longest serving CIC
As the CIC, Mathur will have tenure of about three years, until he turns 65, making him the second-longest serving CIC.  The top post of the commission had become vacant a month back following the retirement of Vijai Sharma.
