New Delhi/ 8 April 2016. The nine day celebrations of Chaitra Navratri begin Friday across the country. All the temples in the capital are exclusively decorated for the occasion. In Maharashtra Chaitra Navratri begins with Gudi Padwa and in Andhra Pradesh with Ugadi.
All the nine days of Navratri are dedicated to Navdurga--expressing nine different forms of the deity. The nine forms are: Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skanda Mata, Katyayani, Kalratri, Maha Gauri and Siddhidatri. The devotees worship these nine incarnations of goddess Durga till nine days. The ninth day is also known as Rama Navami, the birthday of Lord Rama.
Navratri is celebrated widely in every part of the country with great enthusiasm, however with a different flavour. Like in Gujarat devotees worship Goddess as Jagdamba, while in West Bengal it is Durga.
According to Hindu lunar calendar, Friday, April 8, is the first day of the first month Chaitra. Hence new Vikram Samvat 2073 also begins Friday.
