Reena Singh (name changed), a resident of Delhi’s Hauz Khas  shares her experience with Dynamite News, “ life had come to a standstill. Relationships were failing, career was on doldrums and everything in my life seemed to be at stake. I was told by an astrologer that my birth-chart has Kaal Sarp Dosha because anyone from my past seven generations might have killed a snake. So, I would have to rescue a snake from the captivity. It was then, I performed this ritual.” Reena further adds that she really felt relieved after this ritual and things have started working slowly in her favour. However, she is thrilled with her tryst with a member of the reptilian family. 

Snake Charmer’s Role
Sudesh, a snake charmer of the Sapera Basti of Mayur Vihar, phase-3, Delhi, discloses this, “ astrologers recommend performing rituals for removing Kaal Sarp Dosha from one’s Kundli with the help of live snakes. We provide snake as suggested by the astrologer. Puja is performed either by us or the astrologer. After that, we set free the captured snake near some deserted place or river-bank.” The fee for this ritual depends on the kind of snake recommended as per birth-chart and gotra(clan), but it makes handsome money, anything between Rs 2000 to Rs 9000 from a client. Sudesh says the maximum charge is for King Cobra. Sudesh claims, he gets snakes from Haryana as his maternal uncle is a license holder for catching snakes. He says this is his part-time business as only one to two clients turns up in a month for this ritual. 

The Counterview
Acharya Harsh Gupta says,” the Kaal Sarp Dosha is quite a rare phenomenon in birth charts. Secondly, there are enough chances that the snake charmer would catch same freed snake and use it for next client, thus defeating the whole purpose.”  He says that hardly 10 percent people suffer from this dosha. He also pin-points that Kaal Sarp Dosha does not cause troubles only, but it also brings Raj-yoga. Acharya Gupta says, “ many famous personalities like Rajeev Gandhi,  Indira Gandhi, Abhishek Bachchan has Kaal Sarp Yoga, which occurs when all the planets are placed between Dragon’s head (Rahu) and Dragon’s tail (Ketu).”

Points to Ponder
True, the world of snakes has always mesmerized people and so the snake charmers (Sapera) by their profession of dealing with these enigmatic reptilians. Though, this community has lost its centuries’ old charm now. Their main profession is on the verge of extinction after the government enforced a ban on the use of live animals for any sort of entertainment. But, Kaal Sarp Dosha proves a boon for them.

Matter of Debate
However, the matter is highly debatable...faith, blind faith or cheating? But, it is a fact that poor snakes are being replaced from their natural habitat and the marginalized community of the snake charmers are really facing survival issue.
