New Delhi / 23 June 2016. In Britain people are voting to choose whether United Kingdom should remain or leave the European Union (EU).
European Union
The EU is an economic-political union of 28 countries which was created in 1957—with just six nations.
Britain has had an uneasy relationship with the EU since its origin as a counter to nationalism that had permeated Europe after World War II.
The unease has increased since 1975, when Britain voted in the referendum to remain in the European Economic Community. By the early 2010s, uneasiness intensified due to EU expansion.
Prime Minister David Cameron announced in 2013 that another “In/Out” referendum on membership of the EU would be held if the Conservative Party won the 2015 elections.
India jittery
India sees the UK as a “gateway” into Europe. Many Indian companies are listed on the London Stock Exchange and many have European headquarters in London like Zodiac clothing, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, HCL, TCS, Tata motors.
In all there are 800 Indian companies with their business in Britain.
Brexit may lead to Britain revising or tightening its various laws which may affect the business interests of Indian companies there.
The results of the referendum are likely to be declared on Friday.
