New Delhi/ 1 Jan.
Minister of states for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju presented the certificate of Indian citizenship by Naturalisation to famous singer Adnan Sami in New Delhi on Friday. Additional secretary (Foreigners), MHA BK Prasad and Roya Faryabi, Adnan Sami’s wife were also present on the occasion. The singer had sent his application to the Foreigners’ Division of Home Ministry earlier this year. Thanking the Indian government, the singer said there can’t be a more beautiful day than January 1.

Lahore-born singer Sami came to India for the first time in March, 2001 on a visitor’s visa with one year validity issued by the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. His visa was extended from time to time but the Pakistan government did not renew his passport which expired on May 27, 2010 following which the singer approached the Indian government to legalise his stay in India on humanitarian grounds. The Home Ministry had, earlier this year, allowed him to stay in India for an indefinite period.

The singer had shot to fame in India after his ‘Kabhi Toh Nazar Milao’ and ‘Lift Kara De’ topped the charts in early 2000s.
