New Delhi: Senior CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury has passed away. He was ill for the last few days and was undergoing treatment at Delhi AIIMS.

As per Dynamite News correspondent, 72-year-old Sitaram Yechury breathed his last on Thursday at Delhi AIIMS. It is said that Yechury had a lung infection. A team of doctors was treating him for several days, but he could not be saved.

Yechury was first admitted to AIIMS on August 19. He was later taken to the ICU. He is being treated since then. On Thursday, his health deteriorated once again.

Sitaram Yechury was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the leader of the party's parliamentary group. He was born on 12 August 1952 in Chennai in a Telugu-speaking Brahmin family.

Leader Sitaram Yechury dies at 72

He was awarded the Best Parliamentarian Award in Rajya Sabha in 2016. He was arrested during the Emergency while in JNU. After this, he was elected President of JNU Students Union three times in a row.

Elected General Secretary of the party

In 1984, he was included in the Central Committee of CPI (M). In 2015, he was elected General Secretary of the party. Yechury was elected to Rajya Sabha from West Bengal in 2005.

He raised many issues in the House. His health has been deteriorating for the last several days. Recently, Yechury had cataract surgery. Now he has been admitted to AIIMS due to infection in the lungs.

Voice for left ideology

He recently gave a statement regarding the Kolkata incident. Also, he supported the opposition alliance India in the petition filed regarding new criminal laws. He has a distinct identity as a leftist leader. He always raises his voice for leftist ideology.
