Ranchi: The district hospital has successfully treated a four-year-old girl of Dobhi in Bihar. Nirjala Kumari (patient) was youngest cancer patient.
Diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-ALL), Nirjala was discharged on Saturday after 50 days of intensive treatment.
Showed remarkable response
Dr Abhishek Ranjan, the lead physician, explained that despite initial complications with sepsis, Nirjala showed remarkable response to induction chemotherapy.

“The patient is now Minimal Residual Disease (MRD) negative, meaning no detectable cancer cells remain in her system,” he confirmed.
Affects young children
This was verified through bone marrow aspiration and multi-parameter flow cytometry tests. Medical statistics show that B-ALL predominantly affects young children, with 75% of cases occurring in children under six.
While the five-year survival rate for children exceeds 90%, adults over 20 face a significantly lower survival rate of around 40%.

All medical care and support services were provided free of cost.
Complex pediatric cancer
Dr Ranjan encouraged pediatricians to refer similar cases to Sadar Hospital, highlighting their expertise in handling complex pediatric cancer cases.
Civil surgeon Dr Prabhat Kumar said, “Nirjala’s successful treatment demonstrates our hospital's capabilities and sets an inspiring precedent for healthcare facilities across the region.”
