Shillong: The Assam Rifles, India’s oldest paramilitary force, celebrated Veterans Day today in Shillong, paying tribute to its brave veterans and Veer Naris who have dedicated their lives to the service of the nation.

The commemorative event was held at the Assam Rifles Headquarters, where senior officials, ex-servicemen, Veer Naris, and their families gathered to honour the sacrifices and contributions of the Force’s veterans. A solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial marked the beginning of the day, followed by speeches from senior officers reflecting on the rich history and achievements of the Assam Rifles.

Highlighting its vast veteran network, the Assam Rifles revealed that the Force has over 97,264 ex-servicemen and 587 Veer Naris across the country. These veterans are supported through 35 Assam Rifles Ex-Servicemen Soldiers Association (ARESA) centres spread nationwide and three pension-paying offices in Nepal, ensuring their welfare and support.

As part of the celebrations, a Mega Ex-Servicemen Rally was organised under the theme “Serving Those Who Served Us”. More than 118 ex-servicemen from various districts of Meghalaya, including gallantry awardees, Veer Naris, widows, and their dependents, participated in the rally. The event featured medical camps, an ECHS helpdesk, banking facilities, and a grievance redressal cell to address the concerns of the veterans and their families.

Director General of Assam Rifles, Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In his address, he lauded the unwavering service of the veterans, especially those from Meghalaya, for their significant contribution to the security and prosperity of the Northeast and the nation.

Veer Naris, widows, and distinguished ex-servicemen were felicitated during the event as a mark of respect and gratitude. Similar interactions and celebrations were also held at ARESA Centres across the country, where sweets were distributed to the veterans and their families.
