Assam Floods: 1.5 lakh people affected in Karimganj; 40 relief camps set up in different revenue circles areas

Karimganj: The flood situation in Assam's Karimganj district is still grim as over 1.53 lakh people have been affected in the district.

The water levels of three major rivers of the district Kushiyara, Longai and Singla are flowing above the danger level mark and the flood waters submerged 225 villages in the district.

Mridul Yadav, District Commissioner of Karimganj district told ANI that, over 1.50 lakh people and 225 villages of the district have been affected by the deluge.

"Nearly 40 relief camps have set up in different revenue circles areas where around 12,000 people are taking shelter. Around 54,000 animals have also been affected and the flood waters submerged crop areas also," Mridul Yadav said.

He also said that, yesterday five people of a family died in a landslide incident.

"We are providing relief materials to the flood-affected people as per the guidelines of SDRF," Mridul Yadav said.

The district administration is monitoring the flood situation in the district.

Local people, Circle Office/Local Administration, and SDRF teams are engaged in rescue operations in the flood-hit areas and the administration has deployed five medical teams. 

Many people have been forced to leave their homes and are taking shelter in safer places, high lands after the flood waters entered into their homes.

According to the flood reports of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), one person died in Hailakandi district on Tuesday after drowning in flood waters.

The ASDMA flood reports stated that this year's flood has claimed 26 lives in the state so far.

The flood situation in Karimganj district has become worse as more than 1.52 lakh people, including 41,711 children, have been affected.

225 villages under Nilambazar, RK Nagar, Karimganj, and Badarpur revenue circles in Karimganj district have been affected by the deluge and 22,464 flood-affected people are taking shelter in relief camps and relief distribution centres set up by the district administration.

The ASDMA flood report said that 470 villages under 28 revenue circles in 15 flood-hit districts have been affected and the flood waters submerged 1378.64 hectares of crop area in 11 districts.

93,895 domestic animals in 15 districts have also been affected by the deluge.

Earlier on June 15, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma held a meeting with the civil and police administrations and Kaziranga authorities to ensure the safety and security of the animals at Kaziranga National Park, especially during the flood season.

The CM asked the concerned functionaries to put in place all necessary steps and ramp up the response system. (ANI)
