Dark circles under your eyes

New Delhi: Dark circles under the lower eyelids are quite common in both males and females. Most of the time they are accompanied by light and heavy bags. Normally we think that these dark circles are caused due to tiredness. But these is more to it!

What causes dark circles?
There are many reasons for dark circles under your eyes. Some of them include:

1. Fatigue/Sleeplessness
Extreme fatigue or late bedtime can cause dark circles. Lack of sleep can also cause your skin to become dull and paler resulting in dark tissues showing.

2. Eyestrain
Strain on your eyes may be caused by constantly and continuously staring at your television or computer screen. This strain can enlarge the blood vessels around your eyes causing dark circle.

3. Allergies
Allergic reactions and eye dryness can cause dark circles. When you have an allergic reaction, your body releases histamines to fight off the invader. This causes several symptoms, including itchiness, redness, and puffy eyes resulting in dark circles.

4. Dehydration
When your body is not well hydrated, the skin beneath your eyes begins to look dull and your eyes look sunken. Therefore dehydration is a common cause of dark circles under your eyes.

5. Sun overexposure
Sun exposure can cause your body to produce an excess of melanin, the pigment that gives your skin colour. Too much sun — particularly for your eyes — can cause pigmentation in the surrounding skin to darken.

6. Genetics
Family history can be an inherited trait seen early in childhood. Over time, the dark circles may lighten or get darker.

7. Medical
Medical conditions, such as thyroid problem, can also result in dark circles beneath your eyes.

Remedies
Here are some common remedies to get rid of dark circles:

1. Proper sleep
Having proper sleep may also help reduce the appearance of dark circles.

2. Stay hydrated
Consume proper quantity of water. Other fluids can also help keep you hydrated, including milk, tea, and juices.

3. Tea bags
Tea can help stimulate blood circulation and reduce liquid buildup under your skin. Soak two black or green tea bags in hot water for 5 minutes, then chill them in the refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes. Once they’re cold, apply the tea bags to your closed eyes for 10 to 20 minutes, then remove them and rinse your eyes with cool water.

4. Eye creams
Nowadays, many eye creams are available in the market. They can reduce the look of dark circles by hydrating and smoothing the skin around your eyes.

5. Almond oil
Application of almond oil under your eyes may also reduce dark circles. Just apply the almond oil but do not rub.

6. Medical treatments
Some medical treatments are also available to reduce the appearance of dark circles including chemical peels, laser surgery, etc.

A word of caution
It is always advised to consult your doctor before resorting to any of the remedies.

However, be ensured that dark circles are not something that must worry you out of the way. As a matter of fact there is nothing wrong with just leaving them as they are.
