Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya. It is said that the rolling hills around Shillong reminded the European travellers of Scotland. Hence it is also known as the “Scotland of the East”. The fascinating city with its charming natural beauty is situated at an average height of 4,908 feet (1,496m) with the highest point Shillong Peak at 6,449 feet (1,966m).

Dynamite News takes you round of five most beautiful spots in Shillong:

Elephant Falls:
Located 12 km from the city, Elephant Falls have three steps waterfalls. Which was later called as Elephant falls by the British. When the Britishers came to Shillong and saw this fall, they named it “Elephant Falls” because on the left side of the fall there was a rock that resembled like the Elephant. However that rock was destroyed in an earthquake in 1897.

The falls are surrounded with lot of greenery which provides a serene environment. The place is a perfect picnic spot for all ages. Many travellers go there and enjoy the beauty.

Don Bosco Museum: 
Known as Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Culture, the Museum is a treasure of North East and is a great source of learning. It is a major tourists’ spot providing a glimpse of the rich and multi-cultural lifestyles of the indigenous peoples of North East India. 

 

 

Shillong Peak:
Located about 10 kms from the city, Shillong Peak is standing at a height of 6446 feet (1,965m). One of the most visited sites; the peak provides a breathtaking view of Shillong city and Himalayan ranges. The star-studded night along with the city lights is a treat to witness.

 

 

Wards Lake: 
Located in the heart of the city, this horse-shoe shaped lake is a popular spot for a slow walk. The green lawns around the lake are dotted with colourful flowers. Named after Sir William Ward, the then Chief Commissioner of Assam, this Lake is the nature at its very best.

 

 

Lady Hydari Park:
Named after the wife of Governor of Assam Lady Hydari, the park stretches about one Kilometer and presents some of the best grown and bred rose beds. The park is combined with a mini Zoo which passionately adds to its beauty. The park is beautifully maintained and also provides a special play arena for the tiny tots.
