Dynamite News brings you a series of most glorious places of Lord Shiva. This time we take you to Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple in Srisailam, Andhra Pradesh.

 

 

Located in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh it is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The whole area is covered with forests of Kadali, Bilva trees, mountain ranges and Patalaganga (Krishnaveni river).

 

History

 

 

The Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple was earlier called Srigiri.

 

 

The epigraphical evidence reveals that the history of Srisailam began with the Satavahanas who were the first empire builders in South India. The earliest known historical mention of the hill, Srisailam, can be traced to the King Vasishthiputra Pulumavi's Nasik inscription of 1st Century A.D.

 

Architecture

 

 

Dravidian style of architecture was used by the southerners for temple construction which were completely different from the northern style which followed the Vasara and Nagara style of temple architecture. Mallikarjuna Swamy temple is one such temple which is in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

 

 

There are many inscriptions on rock in the temple.

Srisailam is very well connected by air, train and road to the rest of the country. The nearest railway station is the Markapur which is about 85 km away.

The nearest airport is Hyderabad which is 12 km from Srisailam.
