Churches of Delhi exemplify the blend of different cultures that the capital is gifted with. These churches have effectively developed a community based on the core values of nobility and service to humanity in the city. These cathedrals belong to distinct Christian faiths but with the essence of Christianity. Dynamite News shares with you a list of five famous churches in the Capital.

 

1. Sacred Heart Cathedral Church    
 

 

Cathedral of Sacred Heart is considered to be one of the oldest churches of Delhi; it was built during the colonial rule by architect Henry Medd at Delhi’s Gole market. It was started by Father Luke and the Archbishop of Agra laid the foundation stone. The congregations come for prayers in the morning and evening every day. Easter and Christmas are organized mightily in this church every year. The Sacred Heart Cathedral Church is located at Ashok Place in Delhi. 

 

 2. Cathedral Church of the Redemption

 

 

Cathedral Church of the Redemption in New Delhi is one of the famous churches of the capital as well as of overall India, which is located near Rashtrapati Bhavan. It was earlier used by the British Viceroy and was known as the Viceroy Church. It was completed in the year 1935 and in the year 1936 on 18 January it opened for public worship.

 

3. St .Stephen’s Church

 

 

St. Stephen’s Church, located on the Church Mission Road was built in 1862 by Anglican missionaries. It comes under the branch of the Church of North India Diocese of Delhi. The St. Stephen’s Church, Delhi compound also includes the famous St. Stephen’s College and St. Stephen’s Hospital. The church is designed in Italian Gothic architecture and is highly influenced by the Romanesque architecture. It is named after St Stephen who died in 36 A.D. when he was stoned to death in Jerusalem. 

 

4. St. James’ Church 
 

 

St. James’ Church also known as Skinner's Church was built by Colonel James Skinner in the year 1826. It has an Anglican origin and is located at the near Kashmiri Gate intersection of Church road and Lothian road in Delhi. It is said, that during a battle in the year 1800 James Skinner got injured and he prayed and vowed that he’d build a church if he survived. After he recovered, he began construction of the church in 1826. His tomb is also laid in this church.

 

5. St. Thomas Church
 

 

St. Thomas Church was established in the year 1972 dedicated to one of the twelve main disciples of Jesus, St Thomas. Built purely with red sandstone in an Eastern European architectural style, it is also known as the Red Brick Church of Delhi. The church conducts daily and Sunday Mass in the languages of English, Hindi, Tamil and Malayalam. Sunday school is also organized in the mornings. St. Thomas Church is located in the South Delhi area.
