Snow in the Sahara near the town of Ain Sefra, Algeria.

The thin layer of snow formed whirling patterns where the slopes were too steep for it to settle.

Karim Bouchetata captured the vibrant images on 19 December.

It is the first time in almost 40 years that snow has been seen in Ain Sefra.

The spectacle lasted for about a day.

Ain Sefra is only about 1,000 feet above sea level.
