The nine days or Navratri are dedicated to the worship of goddess Durga. Each day of Navratri a new avatar of Maa Durga is worshipped. With each avatar, we learn something.

The seventh day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Kalaratri who is manifestation of Devi Parvati.

Goddess Parvati removed outer golden skin to kill demons named Shumbha and Nishumbha, She was known as Goddess Kalaratri.  Kalaratri is the fiercest and the most ferocious form of Goddess Parvati.

Goddess Kalaratri complexion is dark black and she rides on a donkey. She is depicted with four hands. Her right hands are in Abhaya (fearless) and Varada (blessing) Mudra and she carries sword (Vajra) and the deadly iron hook in her left hands (Khadag).

Although the Goddess Kalaratri is the most ferocious form of Goddess Parvati, She blesses her devotees with Abhaya and Varada Mudras. Because of her Shubh or auspicious power within her ferocious form Goddess Kalaratri is also known as Goddess Shubhankari .
